Oliver Beene

This half-hour comedy follows the life of 11-year-old Oliver Beene (Grant Rosenmeyer). It's 1962 and Oliver's world is chaotic. His dentist father, Jerry (Grant Shaud) likes to spend Sundays drilling his kids' teeth; his mom, Charlotte (Wendy Makkena) does her best to be the happy homemaker; and his brother Ted (Andy Lawrence) has a transistor radio practically glued to his head listening to sports. Oliver's life is tolerable thanks to his friends heavyweight Neal (Ben Bookbinder) and lightweight Michael (Taylor Emerson), who is obviously gay in a time when that still means happy.

Oliver Beene - 101 - Day at the Beach

The early '60s are hardly wonderful for the Beenes of Queens in this sitcom, narrated by younger son Oliver, Wonder Years-style. Oliver's mom, Charlotte (Wendy Makkena), is Jackie Kennedy's biggest fan while his dad, Jerry (Grant Shaud), is a dentist who really loves his work. As for 10-year-old Oliver (Grant Rosenmeyer), he's a clumsy class clown who's hopelessy in love with a tall blonde classmate named Bonnie (Amanda Michalka). In the opener, the Beenes decide to join a beach club. Whether the club will let them join is another matter, but Oliver's ecstatic because Bonnie, an accomplished swimmer, is a member. Too bad he can't swim.

Charlotte and Jerry leave the boys home alone for the first time when they visit a college classmate of Jerry's in Great Neck. Chaos ensues on two fronts. At home, it's caused by Ted's dimwitted friend Harvey (A.J. Truth), who picks the wrong psychotic neighbor to insult. And in Great Neck? Jerry hasn't seen the classmate, Mitch, since Mitch (Kurt Fuller) borrowed $100 from him---in 1947, and Jerry hasn't forgotten. So he's more than a little annoyed when they arrive at his house and see that it's a mansion.

March 30th, 2003: Space Race: When Oliver is suspended from school for breaking the new African-American boy's arm, he tries to explain that it was just an accident. Charlotte decides to make amends by inviting the boy and his family over for dinner. But hijinks ensue when Ted makes out with their daughter and Oliver tries to recreate the accident in an effort to unveil the truth.

The series has opened to promising ratings, and the racy storyline in this episode might just continue the trend. It begins with Oliver and his friend Michael (Taylor Emerson) looking for a hat in a closet and finding something a lot more intriguing - a copy of Peephole. The "nudie magazine" belongs to Michael's father, but before they can put it back, Michael's mother comes home and Oliver ends up with a hot potato - and his brother Ted finds a fantasy friend: a magazine model (Adrienne Janic) who comes to life. Meanwhile, Jerry hires a buxom office assistant (Malia Mathis) and Charlotte is not amused.

Oliver's joy at the chance to win a "Thunderbird Jr" on the Romperama TV show is tempered by a fear that his parents are splitting up. He's already freaked out because his friend Joyce's parents have separated, and he sees "all the signs" of impending divorce in his parents. Meanwhile, big brother Ted is being dragged to Romperama (it's decidedly uncool for kids his age), so he feels he must make a public statement about it.

And Jerry decides he needs his own "place" in the apartment, putting him in Charlotte's doghouse

After Oliver and Ted meet Buddy Fontaine they learn that he won't come to the Beene party making Jerry stretch the lie a bit more when he realizes that the comedian doesn't make it. Instead the Beene's get another surprise guest.
