Heroes of Black Comedy 1 Chris Rock

submitted 2004-02-15 13:29:42
Airdate: 0000-00-00

One of his generation's strongest comedic voices, Chris Rock has taken up the mantle of legendary comics Richard Pryor and Lenny Bruce for comedy that is both funny and socially relevant.

Growing up in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, Chris Rock idolized the comedian Eddie Murphy. He soon followed in Eddie's footsteps, becoming a cast member of Saturday Night Live in 1989.

In 1996, his HBO special Bring the Pain took Rock into territory few comics are brave enough to tread, taping into race in ways that challenged African-Americans as much as whites. It also won him national acclaim and two Emmy awards. A subsequent CD of the special won him a Grammy for Best Spoken or Comedy Album. Rock later repeated this success in his subsequent HBO Special Bigger and Blacker, which was taped on the stage of Harlem's Apollo Theatre. The CD of the performance again won a Grammy.

In the wake of these specials, Chris Rock joined again with HBO to create The Chris Rock Show, a talk show that combines interviews with guests like Reverend Al Sharpton and Puffy Daddy with sketches and live music. The show has been honored with two Emmy nominations for writing and host, winning an Emmy Award for writing. The Chris Rock Show returns for it's fifth season in August.

Chris Rock has starred in many films, including "Down to Earth," "Nurse Betty", "Dogma", and the self-produced rap comedy "CB4." He has also appeared in the films "Lethal Weapon 4," "Dr. Dolittle," "Boomerang," "New Jack City", and "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka!"

Rock is also dedicated to developing other African-American comedic voices, helping to found the first black college humor magazine at Washington, DC's Howard University, "The Illtop Journal."

Chris Rock can be seen later this summer in the movie "Bad Company" opposite Anthony Hopkins.

Cedric the Entertainer

What's in a name? According to Cedric The Entertainer, it's his career! The popular actor and comedian has won three consecutive NAACP Image Awards for "Outstanding Actor In A Comedy Series" for his portrayal of the lovable Coach Cedric Robinson on the WB sitcom "The Steve Harvey Show."

From 1997 through 2000, he traveled across the country as one of the headliners of the super successful "Kings Of Comedy Tour", the top grossing comedy tour in history, sharing the marquee with fellow funnymen Steve Harvey, D.L. Hughley and Bernie Mac. He also starred in the subsequent Spike Lee-directed documentary of the tour "The Original Kings of Comedy."

Cedric made his 1992 television debut on "It's Showtime at the Apollo," and has appeared on numerous television shows since, including "Def Comedy Jam" and "BET's Comic View," which he hosted during the 1994-95 season. In 1994, he received the "Richard Pryor Comic of the Year Award" from Black Entertainment Television.

Cedric will star in a film he co-wrote for Will Smith's Overbrook Entertainment entitled "Preaching Ain't Easy." Additionally, Cedric can soon be seen with Matthew Perry and Elizabeth Hurley in the comedy feature "Servicing Sara" to be released in 2002. Cedric is also starring opposite Ice Cube in the upcoming feature "Barber Shop." Cedric's other film credits include "Ride," "Big Momma's House," "Kingdom Come," and "Dr. Dolittle 2." Cedric is also the author of his first comedy book entitled "Grown-Ass Man" due in bookstores January 2002.

Cedric's comedy tour, "The Bud Light Cedric The Entertainer Comedy Revue" toured the country in 2001, ending at New York's Madison Square Garden to a sold-out crowd.

Cedric recently founded "The Cedric The Entertainer Charitable Foundation, Inc.", which contributes financial aid to inner city communities in his hometown of St. Louis through scholarships and outreach programs.

Steve Harvey

The Grammy nominated Steve Harvey remains one of the busiest and most talented comedians working in Hollywood today. In 2000, he helped break box-office records starring in Spike Lee's documentary film "The Original Kings of Comedy." After that he has been redefining morning drive-time radio in Los Angeles on KKBT-FM, 100.3 The Beat" with unmatched laughter, motivational speaking and community involvement. Steve recently ended his seven-year run as the host of the popular syndicated Saturday night series "It's Showtime at the Apollo." He is currently in the middle of the sixth season of "The Steve Harvey Show."

A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Harvey has been performing stand-up in comedy clubs across the nation for more than a decade, drawing on his own childhood experiences and dead-on observations about life and human nature for much of his material.

His stand-up comedy has been featured in two HBO specials: "HBO Comedy Half-Half" and "Steve Harvey: One Man," the latter which won a 1999 Vision Award in recognition of distinctive cable programming that reflects cultural diversity. In 1997, he released his successful debut comedy album, "Steve Harvey Live...Down South Somewhere."

His first prime-time television venture, the comedy series "Me and the Boys," earned Harvey a nomination for a 1995 People's Choice Award for Favorite Male Performer in a New Television series. Now, as star of "The Steve Harvey Show," he has won four NAACP Image Awards as "Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series" and one for Favorite Variety Series, "It's Showtime at the Apollo." Critics have praised him for his positive portrayal of African Americans on "The Steve Harvey Show," which is The WB's top rated comedy. In March 2001 Steve Harvey also received the ultimate honor of his career, he was named NAACP Image Award's "Entertainer of the Year."

Harvey devotes a great deal of time to "The Steve and Mary L. Harvey Foundation", speaking to youths in detention centers and middle schools nationwide about the pitfalls of drugs and the importance of setting goals.

D.L. Hughley

A popular stand-up who has also made his mark in primetime, D.L. Hughley can currently be seen as the star of his own sitcom The Hughleys, currently in its fourth season on the UPN Network. In its first season, the sitcom received two nominations for People's Choice Awards. The show has been often honored by the NAACP Image Awards, receiving three nominations for "Outstanding Comedy Series" and D.L. receiving four for "Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series."

D.L. joined with fellow comedians Steve Harvey, Cedric the Entertainer, and Bernie Mac for "The Kings Of Comedy Tour", the highest grossing comedy tour ever, making a staggering $37 million dollars nationwide and playing to sold-out crowds in major concert arenas. In 2000, filmmaker Spike Lee directed "The Original Kings of Comedy" concert-film about the tour. The film grossed close to $40 million. D.L. also received a Grammy nomination for "Best Spoken or Comedy Album" for "The Original Kings of Comedy."

One of D.L.'s earliest breaks in the business was an appearance on Def Comedy Jam. Soon D.L. became the first host of Comic View on Black Entertainment Television. HBO has shown two half-hour D.L.'s stand-up specials, the second being nominated for a Cable ACE Award for Best Comedy Special. In 1999, D.L. performed his first one-hour comedy special for HBO entitled D.L. Hughley: Going Home, earning a nomination for an NAACP Image Award for "Outstanding Variety Series/Special." In 2001, D.L. starred in the feature film "The Brothers," alongside Bill Bellamy. D.L. has also appeared as a guest on several major late night talk shows and continues to perform on the road nationally and internationally on an almost weekly basis.

Bernie Mac

Bernie Mac has gone from the small comedy clubs of Chicago to become the highest grossing comedian today, causing a groundswell of attention for Mac's services in all facets of entertainment.

Mac can currently be seen every Wednesday night in the new family comedy, "The Bernie Mac Show." The show debuted to stellar ratings this fall and has been hailed as the "One of the Top Ten Shows of 2001" by Time, Entertainment Weekly and TV Guide. Playing a fictional version of himself, the show follows Mac as he struggles to balance his newfound parental duties.

Additionally, Mac can be seen in Steven Soderbergh's remake of "Ocean's 11", co-starring alongside George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon.

Mac co-wrote with Darrell Dawsey a book entitled "I Ain't Scared of You," which was published this fall from MTV/Pocket Books. In it, he rips through such topics as sex, religion, hygiene, celebrity and more.

He recently began production on Warner Bros. animated feature film, "Lil' Pimp." He will also begin work shortly on a comedy CD for Warner Bros. Records and a pay-per-view special that will air this summer.

As a founding member of the "King's of Comedy" comedy tour, Mac displayed his trademark rapid fire and hard-hitting delivery. The success of the tour spawned Spike Lee's 2000 concert film "The Original Kings Of Comedy," which has grossed nearly $40 million.

Born and raised in Chicago, Mac made his television debut on the landmark HBO comedy series, "Russell Simmons' Def Comedy Jam" which led to him being cast in the Damon Wayans feature "Mo' Money." This marked his feature film debut. Other film credits include "What's The Worst That Could Happen," "Life," "House Party 3" and "How To Be A Player."

Dave Chappelle

Dave Chappelle began performing stand-up comedy in his native Washington, DC at the tender age of fourteen. As a minor, Chappelle's mother, an ordained Unitarian minister, often accompanied him to gigs. Chappelle's stand-up career recently led to his own HBO one-hour stand-up comedy special that aired in August 2000. Chappelle has appeared on over forty national programs including numerous appearances on The Late Show with David Letterman, Late Night with Conan O'Brien and Politically Incorrect.

Dave Chappelle's comedy has also extended into appearances in feature films. Chappelle's first major starring role was in "Half Baked." He played janitor Thurgood Jenkins, a creative bud who does what it takes to help a friend in need.

Chappelle recently completed the Imagine/Universal feature "Undercover Brother" opposite Eddie Griffin and Denise Richards, which will be released in the summer of 2002.

Dave Chappelle has also signed a deal with Universal Pictures to star and co-produce "King of the Park," the true-life tale of famed New York street comedian Charlie Barnett. When Chappelle moved to New York after graduating the prestigious Duke Ellington School of the Arts, Barnett took him under his wing. Barnett encouraged Dave to perform outdoor shows in New York's Washington Square Park, for which Charlie was famous. Barnett, who later succumbed to AIDS, is still a huge driving force behind Dave's personal and professional development.

Chappelle's feature film credits also include "Men in Tights," "The Nutty Professor," "Con Air," "You've Got Mail," and "Blue Streak."

Tony Rock

Born in the same Brooklyn New York Hospital where most of his seven brothers and one sister found their way into the world, Tony Rock, not to be confused with his favorite wrestler, was born laughing. Being the fourth child of Rose and Julius Rock, Tony had a natural knack for entertaining, just like his brother, Chris. He had to just to stay alive. Decatur Street in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood, where he grew up, was one of the toughest that New York had to offer. It also provided a host of rich characters on which to draw.

Tony has been performing for the last two years. After just six months in the business, his first booking on the road lead him to Amsterdam, Netherlands. Upon returning to New York last year, Tony gained a reputation as a young star in the making. The Hollywood Reporter recently picked him as one of the hot young talents to come out of New York. Since February 2000, he's become bi-coastal. When in New York, he's a regular at the Comedy Store, Improv and Icehouse, and he headlines at the Laugh Factory.

In April 2001, he filmed his first television pilot for ABC/Disney. Tony also recently appeared on "The Howard Stern Show." Besides touring the country, a highlight for Tony was when he came home to New York to headline with Mark Curry and John Henton at Harlem's world famous Apollo Theater.

Heroes of Black Comedy 5 Richard Pryor

submitted 2004-02-15 13:29:53
Airdate: 0000-00-00

An inspiration for those after him and a revelation for those before, Richard Pryor is quite simply a comedy genius. His irreverent style sustained him through his morally and economically strained early childhood in Peoria, Illinois, where his grandparents ran both a brothel and a pool hall. A supervisor of a local public recreational facility noticed Pryor's talents and began to develop showcases to feature them. His performing continued on through a stint in the army.

In 1963, Richard Pryor moved to New York to pursue club work. Demand grew for Pryor, leading to several appearances in feature films. These credits include: "Lady Sings the Blues," "Brewster's Millions," "Bustin' Loose", "Car Wash" and the autobiographical "Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life is Calling." Among the most beloved are films where Pryor teamed with Gene Wilder, including "Silver Streak," "Stir Crazy," "See No Evil, Hear No Evil," and "Another You."

Richard Pryor is best known for his live comedy, where he can present the truth in a hyperkinetically delivered, expletive-laced style. His subject matter included black life on the streets, the drug culture, sex and other topical issues. This work has been captured in two feature films, "Richard Pryor Live in Concert" and "Richard Pryor Live on the Sunset Strip," and on best-selling, Grammy Award-winning recordings such as "That Nigger's Crazy" and "Is It Something I Said?"

Richard Pryor's life continued to prove fodder for his act. He has five ex-wives, four children, has suffered two heart attacks and undergone quadruple bypass surgery. In 180 he was rushed to the Sherman Oaks Hospital and Burn Center with mostly third-degree burns over 50 percent of his body. In 1986 Pryor was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, a degenerative disease of the central nervous system.

In 1992 he was presented with the American Comedy Awards' Lifetime Achievement Honor and in 1998 he won the first Kennedy Center Mark Twain Humor Prize.

A personal selection of over an hour and a half of the finest gags from the grand master of innovative comedy. Dave Allen was an alternative comedian before the phrase existed, an innovator who has set the agenda for comedy - and comedians - for more than 30 years. Now, for the first time, he's on video with his personal choice of sketches, gags, and the monologues that wickedly target the foibles of our age. It's a vintage display from a unique raconteur - a man who observes our guilt, weaknesses and doubts, and makes us laugh at them and at ourselves.

Woody Allen - 1999 - Standup Comic [Audio]

submitted 2003-09-27 13:55:51
Airdate: 0000-00-00

About the artist
Compiled from Woody Allen's legendary standup routines of the mid 1960s, Standup Comic is an absolute necessity for any acolyte of the man's solid work from his Casino Royale and New Yorker phase.

"Here's a good example of oral contraception. I asked a girl to go to bed with me, and she said 'No.'"

Between a youthful stint as a TV gag man and his groundbreaking films of the 1970s, Allen tried his hand at standup. He was, predictably, a success. Taken from nightclub dates in 1964, '65, and '68, Standup Comic shows how stylistically similar he was to contemporaries like Bill Cosby but also how his absurd flights of imagination made him utterly unique.

"I took a puff of the wrong cigarette at a fraternity dance once. The cops had to come and get me. I broke two teeth trying to give a hickey to the Statue of Liberty."

Now that he's a junior-varsity Ingmar Bergman, it's easy to forget that Allen's first public face was that of a world-class zhlub--a rumpled redhead who shared stories of analysis, sexual frustration, and failure. The long-form tales featured on Standup Comic (including Allen's famous bit featuring a moose) provide plenty of laughs as well as an early glimpse at this protean comic genius.

Warning about the quality
This guy says it best:
Now the two problems:
1) As noted, this CD presents only parts of the original LPs. More significantly, the individual comedy pieces have been edited here, presumably to get the running time down below the maximum 80 minutes a single CD can hold. The problem is that this changes the pacing of some of these routines, and drops funny lines from others. That's tragic;
2) This CD has been mastered from mediocre sources and, in the case of the middle set, from what is obviously vinyl. This middle set (tracks 6 to 13, from the 1965 show) is particularly 'tinny' sounding, with little midrange or bass, and clearly no effort to even remove the pops and tics of the vinyl. THIS PORTION SOUNDS WORSE THAN THE ORIGINAL LP! Rhino is usually dependable, but they dropped the ball on this one. The mastering of the other material is better, although far from audiophile quality. The only saving grace is that this sound quality isn't critical for a spoken word recording. But it still stinks.

Bill Bailey 2001 Bewilderness

submitted 2003-07-17 10:59:08
Airdate: 0000-00-00

Bill Bailey has always been a desirable addition to any comedy club-night. His considerable keyboard and guitar skills inevitably provide a memorable highlight to any line-up of comedians on the circuit. In short, the man has charisma; in a one-man show, however, Bailey's a little unfocused. Filmed at the Grand Theatre, Swansea, Bill Bailey--Bewilderness Live takes too long to get going. It's a form of self-deprecation designed to encourage endearment in his audience, but he spends so much time deconstructing his presence on stage that we begin to question the validity of him being there at all. Soon though, Bailey is comfortably installed behind his keyboard; it's then that the entertainment starts. He doesn't stick exclusively to songs, but makes the keyboard work for him as a box of sound effects. Bailey also throws in a few location-specific gags to make his audience feel special and gets an easy laugh with the idea of their national dish being cheese on toast. Jumping around from musing about the disappointment of Kinder Surprise eggs to medieval porn to men's tendency not to admit ignorance to a brilliant take-off of Chris de Burgh, which comes out of nowhere. Yes, Bailey lacks an inherent structure--unlike Harry Hill or Al Murray--so you could walk in half way through and not miss any underlying subtleties. Even without clever connections between individual set pieces, there are enough stand-alone moments of pure comic bliss that'll have you weeping with mirth. This is a man blessed with a good face for comedy and a likeable demeanour and softness (however accidental), which inclines you towards cutting him more slack.

George Carlin 1978 Again

submitted 2003-07-18 16:45:06
Airdate: 2001-08-28

"My job is thinking about goofy sh--," declares George Carlin, the ever-reflective absurdist and star of George Carlin Again. The second in Carlin's long string of HBO specials since 1977, Again (1978) finds the once buttoned-down comic performing in the round and musing, as is his wont, on many vital issues of the day. What, for example, do restaurants do with the rest of a frog after cooking its legs? Who empties the coins out of wishing wells? To the delight of his Phoenix audience, Carlin also takes a detour into pop philosophy with a look at our relationship with time ("There is no 'now.' It could be the middle of last month for all we know.") and death ("Everybody gets a two-minute warning. Try to use yours to die big."). Oddly, a nostalgic reprise of the Hippie-Dippie Weatherman from Carlin's early career falls flat; the comedian senses it and segues into a more trenchant and daring bit about dirty words and American law. This is not a monologue for the faint of heart, but Carlin fanatics will be pleased.

George Carlin 1977 On Location With George Carlin

submitted 2003-07-18 16:45:03
Airdate: 2001-08-28

George Carlin's first HBO special, taped in 1977, now looks like a fascinating piece of television history. Preceded by a cautionary statement about Carlin's penchant for using strong language (and a reminder that Chaucer and Shakespeare wrote bawdy material, too), On Location with George Carlin clearly draws a line between the then-fledgling cable channel and commercial networks. With that much drama in the background, one might expect Carlin's appearance before a young University of Southern California audience to sizzle with controversy, but that's hardly the case. A little tentative before the cameras (and hampered by a failing microphone that takes a while to replace), the comic leans on safe but genuinely funny conceptual material: "Did you ever clear your throat for another person?" "What if everybody came to your house?" There's a cute bit about playing Monopoly with no strategy for winning, and even a slice or two of good old head humor. (Try fasting for two days, Carlin advises, then smoke seven joints and take $500 to the grocery store.) An entertaining though modestly ambitious program, all around.

George Carlin 1984 Carlin On Campus

submitted 2003-07-18 16:45:40
Airdate: 2001-08-08

The dean of observational humorists in America preaches to a like-minded choir in this lively 1984 college performance by George Carlin. Beginning with a little offstage psychodrama (albeit funny) about the pain of being a class clown in Catholic school, Carlin on Campus soon hits the boards with the former Hippie-Dippie Weatherman's take on Brooklynese pronunciations of the names of sexually transmitted disease ("hoipes"), plus a prayer for the separation of church and state, feuds between breakfast foods, and the absurdity of wearing jungle camouflage in a desert. Carlin's tone and choice of material toughen up as the show goes along: he makes an astute assault on passive-aggressive drivers, lobbies hard for his "world's most obscene cheer," and suggests that people may be ready for "full-contact chess." Much of this stuff is pretty funny, though the program is marred a bit by reliance on some lowbrow, pretaped material that punctuates Carlin's monologue. A contrarian to the end, however, Carlin is going to do what he's going to do, and that's part of his charm.

George Carlin 1986 Playin With Your Head

submitted 2003-07-18 16:45:09
Airdate: 2003-01-28

Observational humor had been George Carlin's specialty for over 20 years when Playing with Your Head--the comedian's fifth special for HBO--was recorded in 1986. Carlin's not resting on his laurels here, presenting an abundance of new, politically incorrect material while expanding a few older routines. In "Sports" he applies hilarious criteria to what does or doesn't qualify (hockey doesn't count; lacrosse is a "faggot college activity"), and "A Moment of Silence" pays mock-mournful tribute to an ill-fated (and presumably fictional) group of "43 elderly, mentally retarded Bolivian senior citizen volleyball fans." If that kind of irreverence puts you off (and if so, why are you reading this?), you'll fare better with the universal humor of "Losing Things" (we all do it, right?), and a characteristic survey of language in "Hello and Goodbye." In any case, Carlin's best enjoyed when seen and heard, and the film noir spoof "The Envelope" provides a clever introduction to the funnyman's entrance onstage.

George Carlin 1988 What Am I Doing In New Jersey

submitted 2003-07-18 16:45:10
Airdate: 2003-02-25

Growing up in New York City, George Carlin was always the class clown. He went on to become one of the great comedians of all time, with appeal that spans generations. His brand of provocative sociopolitical commentary and scathing comic style brought him four Grammy awards, most recently in 2002. Carlin was the first-ever host of NBC's Saturday Night Live, and has starred in twelve HBO specials. He continues to perform to sold-out audiences at venues across the country. George Carlin's sixth HBO standup concert special, "What Am I Doing in New Jersey?," aired as a live broadcast from the park Theater in Union City, New Jersey. The live performance includes classic routines, "Cars & Driving II," "Reagan's Gang, Church People, and American Values," "People I can Do Without," and "Keeping People Alert."

Airdate: 2000-07-18

If you want to laugh in hysterics and relate to ordinary every day life, you will want to watch this video. Carlin does it again, as he describes words and phrases in relation to air travel and more. He is one of the best comedians of over two decades and after seeing Jammin' In New York (1992) for the first time, I do not at all regret this purchase. This one should be in any Carlin fan's, albeit, comedy-lover's video collection. Enjoy!

George Carlin 1996 Back In Town

submitted 2003-07-18 15:43:41
Airdate: 0000-00-00

Recorded live at NYC's Beacon Theatre this 1996 stand-up special finds the grumpy old man of alternative comedy as energetic, cynical and irascible as ever. Fans will rejoice is Carlin's twisted routines but it's a bit disappointing to see old George relying on the usual liberal comic targets (Christians, conservatives, Republicans, rich folk, white folk etc,.) while bringing nothing new to he table. the bile flows freely but that's all it is.

Fortunately towards the end of the show Uncle George gets back to the gleefully scatological and absurd material with which he made is name in the 60's and 70's - no one tells a fart joke or does an oxymoron gag like George Carlin.

Hardcore fans will delight in Carlin's signature rants, less fervent admirers may want to try some of his earlier, frankly funnier, material first.

George Carlin has been tinkering with our collective psyche for more than 45 years. Carlin's hysterical routines "Airport Security", "Fear of Germs", "Cigars", "Man Stuff" and many more are included.

George Carlin 2001 Complaints And Grievances

submitted 2003-07-18 16:50:00
Airdate: 0000-00-00

GEORGE CARLIN returns to HBO for his record twelfth stand-up special and fourth live performance when he stars in an all-new hour of no-holds-barred comedy. Presented direct from the stage of the Beacon Theater in New York City, uncensored and uninhibited, GEORGE CARLIN: COMPLAINTS AND GRIEVANCES airs Saturday, November 17 at 10pm live.

For his latest performance, this longtime HBO favorite will train his scathing wit on a host of timely subjects, taking aim at sacred cows of all persuasions.

From his famous "seven words you can't say on TV" in the '70s to his assault on pretentious buzzwords of the '90s ("maximize," "prioritize," etc.), George Carlin's razor-sharp wit and acute insights have made him one of the most influential forces in comedy for three decades. The New York native made his first TV appearance in 1965 on "The Merv Griffin Show," going on to perform stand-up on such programs as "The Ed Sullivan Show" and "The Hollywood Palace." Chafing against the restrictions of commercial TV, Carlin began concentrating on more personal and political material in the early '70s, emerging as a leading counterculture comic.

Headlining his first special on HBO in 1977, Carlin has also appeared on two "Comic Relief" benefits and hosted the 1995 special "20 Years of Comedy on HBO." He's won two Grammy Awards for his comedy albums, while his books "Brain Droppings" (1997) and the current "Napalm and Silly Putty" were best-sellers. His most recent HBO special, "George Carlin: You Are All Diseased," debuted in Feb. 1999.

The executive producers of GEORGE CARLIN: COMPLAINTS AND GRIEVANCES are George Carlin and Jerry Hamza; producers, Kimber Rickabaugh and Rocco Urbisci; director, Rocco Urbisci; writer, George Carlin.

Dave Chappelle - 2004 - For What It's Worth

submitted 2004-09-06 06:23:43
Airdate: 2004-01-01

Delivering his extreme, ultra-blue brand of comedy from San Francisco's Fillmore Theatre, stand-up comic Dave Chappelle demonstrates that he's able to easily hold an audience's attention for an hour.

In this new Showtime production, Chappelle, a multiple-Emmy-nominated performer with a Comedy Central series, features and live tours to his credit, displays excellent timing and style in some very funny routines.

The edgy material might make viewers uncomfortable as he riffs on groups including Native Americans, but the comic's easy, likable delivery allows us to forgive his politically incorrect routines.

Chappelle starts a bit slowly as he pokes fun at gay and tough San Francisco districts with some so-so gags, but soon he's launching into outrageous, laugh-provoking material.

Pushing beyond the ordinary, he spins stories that go way out there, including a sexually explicit routine about a masturbating homeless man who holds a busload of people at bay. Using the subject of AIDS as a point of departure, he explores the pros and cons of interspecies love with monkeys.

Barbed social commentary and original, powerful insights are manifested as Chappelle points out the inequalities of racial and gender bias, proving that the comic can run the gamut from silly to sober.

The Act
The Diceman's pay-per-view special comes to home video, with all of his signature homor intact.

The Artist
One of the most controversial standup comics since Lenny Bruce, Andrew "Dice" Clay has brought the vulgar comedy of hatred, obscenity, and misogyny to new lows or new highs, depending on one's age and feelings about such subjects. His black leather jacketed, cigarette-puffing "Diceman" persona was so raunchy and offensive that he was banned from performing on the MTV network and was eventually blackballed in Hollywood after his obscene performances caused 20th Century Fox to tear up their movie contract with him, despite that fact that he was filling up clubs and even Madison Square Gardens with fans.

Billy Connolly - 2002 - Live

Airdate: 0000-00-00

As you might have guessed already, Billy Connolly Live 2002 presents highlights from the Big Yin's 2002 stage tour. The programme is divided in two, the first part offering an hour from his Dublin show, the second delivering 45 minutes of highlights from eight other performances. Now 60, age has not withered Connolly--even if, as he is fond of reminding us, his pubic hair has turned grey--and his restless energy, enthusiasm, casual obscenity, and anger is as intense as ever. He is also, of course, still very, very funny. Whether talking about the horrors of a prostrate examination or reminiscing about a prank played by fellow ex-Humblebum Gerry Rafferty, Connolly has the Dublin audience in hysterics. Killarney is treated to an explanation of why he hates beaches and Newcastle gets a wonderful demonstration of how his wife suffers from his sleep apnoea. In London, Billy delivers a spot-on lecture on the difficulty of buying an airline ticket, while Manchester discovers "Hungry Bum Syndrome", and Bournemouth gets a hilarious tale involving vegemite and bed sheets. Finally Connolly's Sheffield account of filming a sex scene for the movie The Big Man (1990) is just priceless. Crude, rude and not for the remotely easily offended, this is Connolly the stand-up comedian on top form.

After I Spy and before The Cosby Show, Bill Cosby left his own inimitable mark on the arena of stand-up comedy in this live concert showcasing his down-to-earth observations on the rigors and joys of family life. Cosby, using only a microphone and a chair, discusses his take on raising kids and the illogical nature of children and the futility of trying to argue with a child that in the end may be smarter than you. Notable highlights include Cosby's ruminations on the meaning of the all-purpose phrase "I don't know" to kids, and Cosby describing the effect raising children has on his wife Camille's mental state and the pitch of her voice. Containing the basis for the humor of his long-running situation comedy, Bill Cosby: Himself is a polished, occasionally insightful, and frequently hilarious night of comedy from one of the longtime masters of the form.

Artist
Mitch Hedberg was stranded on a houseboat in a lake in Nevada with 20 guys. This testosterone flotilla did not leave the 30-year-old stand-up euphoric. "I'm not into being with men only," he says by phone from his home in Minneapolis-St. Paul. "I've never been into that. Talking about pussy, with dirty magazines lying around. Everybody gets horny and nobody can do anything about it." Pragmatically skewed. That's Mitch Hedberg (who opens Comedywood's new downtown club at Avenue and Bloor tonight). To Hedberg -- a comedian with an almost Hunter S. Thompson approach -- comedy is 90 per cent experience and 10 per cent writing. To this end he actively seeks out new, weird environments -- such as male-infested houseboats.

It's an approach that's paid off. I could spew about the development deal with FOX TV he bagged at this year's Just For Laughs Festival. I could sing an aria about his killer set at the gala and in the comedy lab (where he had one of the few genuinely funny sets). But those are material trappings; many a development deal has gone with the wind. Hedberg's gift, a laconic delivery laced with a cynical but at times innocent disposition, will stand the test of time. After all, it was built over nine gruelling years of road work and writing.

Hedberg is not one of your hey-I'm-not-making-it-as-an-actor-so-I'll-try-stand-up types. He entered the business the right way, by accident. It was 1989 and he was living in Florida.

Album Details from sacredcow.com:

Note from Kevin: This is the first official stand-up comedy CD I produced for Bill. We recorded this at the Laff stop in Austin right after we finished the Marble Head Johnson album. This was the beginning of Bill's more political stuff about the War in Iraq, but Relentless I think is one of his more playful works.

With American comedian Bill Hicks there was always an awareness of other people, of how our society links together. With this came an idealism and a vision of what the world could be. But first he had to slay all the "fevered egos" polluting the planet. He saw himself as a flame, Shiva The Destroyer, using comedy as a weapon to expose truths and show people how governments are screwing us every day of our lives. He also happened to be achingly funny such was the accuracy of his comedy. At the age of 13 Bill Hicks did his first gig. Six weeks before his death, aged 32, he did the last. In the intervening years he frequently did over 250 gigs a year. He tried to reach as many people as possible, to put them in touch with inner and outer space in a majestic flight of one consciousness thinking. Those he inspired haven't lost the ability to take a ride.

People use and misuse the word "tragedy" all the time. It seems to accompany the death of anybody famous. But the real definition of tragedy evokes a sense of loss and poignancy, a sense of someone dying before they really gave everything they had to offer. Without hyperbole, Bill Hicks' death was a tragedy, for there was so much still to come from this creative, imaginative talent. When he died in 1994 the world lost a rare talent, but his spirit and philosophy still live on.

Ruediger Hoffmann - 1995 - Der Hauptgewinner

submitted 2003-07-18 12:46:35
Airdate: 1995-09-04

Ruediger Hoffmann - 2000 - Ich Komme

submitted 2003-07-18 13:01:59
Airdate: 2000-10-09

Wiederholung schafft Sicherheit. Wiederholung schafft Vertrautheit. Und so was schafft ja nun wirklich Vertrauen.

Will er doch.

Einer davon, "Immer On The Road" gemeinsam mit Inga Rumpf.

About the Act
In 1993, Eddie made his West End debut with his first one-man stand-up show, Live At The Ambassadors, for a 4-week run at the Ambassador’s Theatre. The show was such a success that the run was extended twice and led to an invitation for Eddie to appear for a week at the Just For Laughs Montreal Comedy Festival as a showcase artist, an Olivier Award nomination for “Outstanding Achievement” and a British Comedy Award for “Top Stand-up Comedian”. Eddie then took the show on a nationwide tour of the UK.

The success of the show prompted Eddie to record and release his first video, also called Live At The Ambassadors.

Like all his subsequent video releases (Unrepeatable, Definite Article, Glorious and Dress To Kill), it was recorded in one shoot. As Eddie explains, “We record it in one shoot so it's really scary. I like the idea of just fucking going for it and it means I have to do each show as the key one”.

About the Act
Following on from the success of his first live stand-up show at the Ambassadors Theatre and on UK tour in 1993, Eddie returned to London’s Albery Theatre on January 31st, 1994, with a new show, Unrepeatable. It was during this 7-week run (which sold out within a week – a total of 34,000 tickets) that the recording for the Unrepeatable video was made.

Eddie took to the road again in the spring of 1995 with a 56-date sell-out tour of Unrepeatable, throughout the UK and Eire. The release of the video of this show coincided with this tour, and was, like most of Eddie’s recorded performances, filmed in 1 shoot.

A special one-hour version of Unrepeatable was transmitted on Channel 4 on 11th April 1997 and marked Eddie’s first major foray into television – up until then, Eddie had avoided performing live on television and his refusal to do so had become something of a trademark. However, the broadcast of Unrepeatable was a great success.

Eddie said of his live performances, “I never write it down cause I’m a very lazy person and I’m partially dyslexic and it’s not really suited to the kind of comedy I do – I get little ideas and ad-lib them on stage and move them around.”

Album Info
“It’s called Definite Article because I’m much more definite about where I’m going.”

Eddie’s 3rd show, Definite Article, opened at London’s Shaftesbury Theatre in October 1995. The show ran for 10 weeks and sold out completely. As warm-up gigs for this run, Eddie toured small venues throughout the Western Isles of Scotland, Wales, Cumbria, Sheffield and Dublin, where the venue capacities ranged from 80 in Ullapool to 1200 at the University of Sheffield

Memorably, the show opened with Eddie coming through a giant book, seated in a giant armchair and resplendent in an orange Gaultier jacket. On the opening night a button fell off the jacket. Eddie said of the incident, “An actor would have kicked it to the side of the stage. I thought I’ll talk about this. Then I tried to pull the thread off but couldn’t get to it. Someone threw a pair of scissors on stage, then someone threw a sewing kit. I said “Good heckle”. I knew I had to do it.

Once you commit, as long as you finish you’ll be fine, so I sewed the button back on and talked about my granny and her sewing. That’s what I learned from street performing, all you have to do is finally do it.”

A 4-month World tour with Definite Article followed in September 1996, beginning with a performance at the De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill-on-Sea on 1st September, and then shows in Paris (in French), Reykjavik, Amsterdam, Stockholm and Copenhagen and a 4-week sell-out run at New York’s PS122, as well as 45 dates across the UK and Eire. It was during the UK leg of the tour, at a performance at the Cambridge Corn Exchange in November 1997, that Eddie was engaged in a fracas with an audience member, who insulted Eddie for wearing makeup etc, the result of which was a black eye for Eddie. However Eddie won through in the court case as the man concerned received a fine.

Definite Article won Eddie a second British Comedy Award for “Top Stand-up Comedian” and a New York Drama Desk Award Nomination for “Best Solo Artist”.

About the Act
On Tuesday 11th June 1997, Eddie announced the dates of his new tour, Glorious, at a secret gig at the Union Chapel, London.

He then began touring with the show in September that year - a month at New York’s PS122 and shows in Paris were followed by a mini-tour of London from October 20th. These performances at the Hammersmith Labatts Apollo, Brixton Academy, Docklands Arena and Kentish Town Forum (West, South, East and North), made up the first ever comedy tour of London and marked Eddie’s first solo appearance in the capital for 2 years - he played to 56,000 people in 4 weeks.

A 27-date tour of the UK, Scotland and Wales followed and, as the grand finale, Eddie added an extra date, the London Arena on 21st December, at which he played to an audience of 8,000, the largest comedy event ever staged in the UK at that time.
