Cracker

Dr. Eddie "Fitz" Fitzgerald (Robbie Coltrane) is an alcoholic, chain-smoking, womanizer who just happens to be an expert psychologist. In spite of marital and family problems, he is often called to assist the police in difficult cases that cannot be easily solved.

Tim, a 14 year old boy, is found hanging from a tree in the woods but the police pathologist concludes that he was murdered first then hung. The boy's English teacher, Mr Cassidy, then attempts suicide, apparently still believing that Tim killed himself - and Cassidy then becomes Bilborough's prime suspect. Together with Beck and against the backdrop of a witch hunt by the boys father and his friends, Fitz extracts a confession from Cassidy but is it the truth? Meanwhile, Judith is now back at the family home but her and Fitz's problems are far from over, as he stuggles to deal with her revelation that she slept with Graham, her therapist. Things are further complicated when Penhaligon asks Fitz to go on holiday with her.

In a leafy suburban community, Kenneth Trant is a headmaster of a local school and leader of a Christian sect, and his brother Michael runs a packaging firm. Their wives, Virginia and Norma respectively, are friends. Norma finds out that Kenneth has had an affair with Joanne Barnes, a 17 year old student of the school and member of the church and she and Virginia kidnap her and lock her in Kenneth's house. When Kenneth and Michael arrive, the four of them give Joanne an overdose of drink and pills and plan to dispose of her unconscious body in the crusher at Michael's factory. Once again it is up to Fitz and Penhaligon to find the true culprits and break the conspiracy of silence between the four Trants.

Albie Kinsella (Robert Carlisle) is a Liverpudlian factory worker and football supporter who is overcome by anger after the death of his father. He kills an Asian shopkeeper and a uni professor and then threatens a reporter who works for The Sun. DCI Bilborough reluctantly rehires Fitz who realises that Albie is bent on revenge for the disaster at the Hillsborough football stadium in 1989 in which 96 people died.

Bill Nash is a young man of 17 running from a children's home after living with a succession of foster parents which failed to lead to adoption. He starts work experience at a factory run by Stuart Grady, who lets him sleep on his floor for the night. Grady's landlady concludes that the two are a gay couple and orders Grady to leave. Attempting to threaten her with a knife, Bill accidentally wounds her badly and then Grady kills her before she can call the police. As the two go on the run from the police they develop a close relationship with Bill taking the lead.

Beck is now nearing the end of a stay in a mental hospital, supposedly recovering from his guilt over the death of Bilborough and still not admitting that he raped Penhaligon. Beck returns to the force just as they are investigating the brutal murder of a prostitute by David Harvey. The evidence against Harvey is strong but whilst he is custardy another similar murder takes place and DNA samples seems to indicate it was the same man. Fitz begins to suspect David's brother Michael, a catholic priest who is also conducting Fitz's mothers funeral - then another murder takes place which seems to indicate otherwise. As a result, David Harvey has to be released from custordy, a guilt-ridden Beck sees the opportunity to achieve a kind of justice by taking matters into his own hands.

Janice is a researcher at Queens University in Manchester who has become obsessed with Fitz, sending him a love letter which he reads out during a lecture. She then kills two male students luring each of them to her flat, chaining them to her bed then electrocuting them. When Fitz is taken off the case she resorts to telephoning him and then targeting his son Mark as her next victim.

Fitz is on a lecture tour of Hong Kong when he is hired by Commander Ellison of the Royal Hong Kong police to help investigate the murder of a businessman, Peter Yang. He requests help from Manchester hoping for Penhaligon but getting Wise instead. Also on the case is DCI Janet Lee Cheung who is suspicious of Fitz's ability to help them. The man responsible for the death is Dennis Philby whose own business debts are rising sharply and who refused to be "bought out" by Yang. His girlfriend, Soo Lin Tang, is pregnant but intends to abort simply because they cannot afford to keep the child. Dennis locks her in a storage crate and murders her obstetrician, then a civil servant who refuses to grant a passport on the strength of a faked marriage certificate.
Filmed entirely on location in Hong Kong, partly beacause of the June 1996 IRA bomb in Manchester.
