Cold Feet

Before Cold Feet, there was sitcom and there was drama. This 1997 newcomer straddled both worlds effortlessly and single-handedly seemed to create a new genre. The programme introduced three Manchester couples at different stages of the relationship development continuum: Adam and Rachel, in the early throws of new-found love; Pete and Jenny, making their first foray into parenthood; and David and Karen, the immediately recognisable modern-day parents. Over the course of five series, creator Mike Bullen drags these hugely appealing characters through virtually the entire range of emotions, using intense and often sensitive storylines but never forgetting that Cold Feet is also a comedy: one of Bullen's greatest triumphs is in making events from everyday life appear totally familiar yet achingly funny.

Robert is determined to win Jenny over, and keeps calling her at work and sending flowers to her at home. Eventually she gives in as long as they can do things her way. They go out for a curry, and things end up getting spicy back at her place afterwards. Meanwhile, Adam and Rachel discover that it was a false alarm, and she is not pregnant, but decide to start trying for a baby. When a local campaigner, Jessica, calls about plans to demolish a local playground, Karen forces David to show a bit of spirit and go to the meeting. At the meeting he soon gets in to the swing of things, and becomes an important part of the protest group. Pete has found a new place to live, and is surprised to learn that his landlord Matthew, is gay. He reacts badly at first, but they soon become friends.

Adam and Rachel begin IVF treatment as they want to start a family. Robert and Jenny return from a trip to New York getting on very well, whilst Pete has been taking care of little Adam. Pete has also made friends with Ramona when they met in the park, and he soon plans to bump into her again. When he asks her out for the weekend, he is surprised to learn that David is having a birthday party to which he hadn't been invited. At the party (which is fancy dress) Ramona and Jenny have words, whilst Robert and Pete clash once again. Fellow protester Jessica attends, and she and David end up kissing in the back garden. Waking up with a huge hangover the next day, he finds that the friends have all clubbed together to buy him a motorcycle.

Pete agrees to play on his landlord's gay football team, but gets a red card for being straight after sharing a passionate kiss with Ramona. After the match he stays the night with Ramona (although they just talk), and has a rather embarrassing breakfast with the disapproving David looking on. David is working closely with Jessica on their campaign, and have fantasies about her, whilst Karen gets in touch with old flame Brodie. However, after meeting him for lunch, she realises how much they've both changed, and that nothing could happen between them now. Robert and Jenny are getting along well, but Jenny is cautious that he shouldn't stay the night in case it confuses little Adam. After he assures he isn't going anywhere, she lets him stay the night. There is bad news for Adam and Rachel as they are told that they will be unable to have children as a result of Rachel's previous abortion. Rachel feels responsible, and when she tells Adam she thinks they should split up, he proposes! Ramona becomes frustrated with being Pete's councillor instead of his lover, and says that he should get over Jenny before seeing anyone else – so ends their affair.

Rachel and Adam announce their engagement to the group, who are enthusiastic despite secretly thinking they are doing it for the wrong reasons. After talking with their friends about it, they agree to postpone the wedding, although they don't seem thrilled at the idea. David is thinking more and more about Jessica, and they end up meeting for a lunch date in a hotel. Meanwhile, Pete arranges to meet a woman he has been talking to online, who turns out to be a 12 year-old girl! His trip is not all wasted though, as he ends up getting a date with her teacher, Emma. Karen's old friend Brodie puts on an art exhibition, and Karen buys a piece for Rachel and Adam as an engagement present. They feel guilty accepting it as they had called the whole thing off, so Rachel proposes and Adam says yes!

Pete has arranged a surprise trip to Belfast for Adam's stag weekend, whilst the girls are going to a health farm for Rachel's hen weekend. Karen and Jenny soon confess that they are bored of sitting around in dressing gowns, so the girls all turn to the minibar instead. In Belfast, the lads have been doing some heavy drinking when Adam runs into his first ever girlfriend, Jane. The girls are also getting drunk, and when playing truth or dare, Jenny lets slip that she once kissed Adam. Rachel is mortified, but manages to forgive Jenny, and they plan a trip to surprise the boys in Belfast. When David says he has gone to call Karen, and Karen then calls, Pete discovers that he in fact was calling Jessica, and the truth about the affair comes out. Whilst out walking with Jane, Adam ends up kissing her and is horrified to wake up in her bed the next day. She assures him that nothing happened, and he makes it back to the beach just in time to meet with the girls, so that nobody knows what he has done. Adam and Rachel argue about the kiss with Jenny, but soon make up, whilst Jenny and Pete admit that they miss one another.

With the help of Jenny, Rachel and Adam are trying to organise their wedding, which inevitably leads to an argument as Rachel doesn't think he's taking it seriously enough. He escapes to the pub with Pete, who is in a great mood thanks to his new relationship with Emma. In an attempt to make up with Rachel, Adam goes out with Pete and David and chooses her a very expensive (and very ugly) engagement ring. When Rachel later loses it, she has to go out and buy yet another of the foul rings. When recounting this tale to Robert, Jenny finds his disinterested, and he admits he doesn't like her friends. Later, David spots Robert out for dinner with someone else, whilst he himself is having a secret rendezvous with Jessica – they agree to keep one another's secrets. Jessica finds David's behaviour cowardly, and decides to end their affair. Robert then returns to Jenny, and breaks it off, saying he needs more space. Later, Adam returns home to find they now have two of the rings, and after a fight, they decide to take them both back to the shop, and spend the money on something more worthwhile. This also helps them to decide that the entire wedding plans should be scaled down a little to suit their budget better. Having previously suggested they get divorced, Pete comes round to comfort Jenny about her break up, and says he wants them to be friends.

It's the wedding day, and whilst Rachel is frantically getting ready, Pete and Adam are calmly watching TV and talking. When Adam asks Pete if he'll ever marry Emma, he starts thinking about life with her compared to life with Jenny, and realises he has to break it off. When Robert calls at Jenny's to return his key, they end up getting into a fight, in which he tells her about David's affair. Jenny then tells Rachel, leaving her in a quite a state, especially as David is meant to be giving her away. Adam arrives at the church late, and things are further delayed when Rachel confronts David about his affair halfway down the aisle and he admits it so she takes him outside to talk. After the ceremony (in which everyone wears their own smart clothes instead of the usual white dress and tuxedoes), everyone goes back to Karen and David's for the reception. Here, Adam confronts Rachel about David, and she tells him. All the friends now know except for Karen, and when David finds out he realises he has to tell her. Meanwhile, Pete mentions Rachel's previous marriage in his speech, much to the surprise of her parents! Revelations are going on everywhere, as David has told Karen about his affair much to her disgust. She says he can stay in their home for the children, and that they will maintain the illusion of being happily married to the outside world. On a happier note, Pete and Jenny wake up together the next morning, and it looks as though they might be getting back together.

David and Karen's plan for an amicable divorce runs into problems when Mark (Sean Pertwee) gets back with Karen and advises her to get her own lawyer. Meanwhile, Ramona falls for life guard Lee.
